I have had photos taken three times in my house. And even though I tend to be a bit of a hermit, I decided to build on my travel-to-Puero-Rico-momentum and find a photography studio to go to. It was time for something different, and the idea of a professional photography studio sounded quite fun.
My last photos were taken in 2023, and my hair has totally changed—the gray has fully grown in. Plus, I no longer wear glasses (thank you, Lasik). As I’ve said for years, no old headshots! I get photos taken regularly because I want to look like myself, and the brown hair wasn’t me anymore.
Time for something different!
I found Atlanta Brand Photographer Katya Vilchyk through an old-fashioned Google search, “branding photographer near me.” I wanted someone who understood branding and did that type of photo shoot for clients, not just headshots. It’s always been important that the photographer I work with is able to capture photos that consider your whole brand, and how the photos will fit on your website and social media.
I loved the work on her website. It was bright, fun, and felt like people’s personalities came through. That’s exactly what I wanted. Her prices were reasonable. We talked on the phone (a free consult), and I could tell that this is her specialty.
I also decided to get my hair and makeup done! I’ll never do my makeup as good as a professional, so I figured, let someone who does this for photo shoots handle it. I wanted to look like me, and I wanted to look good on camera. This was better in the hands of someone who does camera-ready makeup.
After we talked, Katya sent a contract, I paid, and then I did her questionnaire in which she asked really good questions. The onboarding process was smooth (you know how important I think onboarding is).
Before the shoot, Katya suggested some things to wear, we talked about colors and backgrounds, and she told me to bring a few props like my computer, my favorite mug, and my WordPress pins.
Then on the big day, with my hair freshly-washed and no makeup on, I got in the car and drove an hour.
Located in a cute little downtown area, with big windows, the studio was fun and filled with couches, chairs, plants, a desk, and decorative items. I stepped into hair and makeup, and wow was it worth it…I immediately felt a confidence-boost!
The photo shoot began and I quickly felt at-ease. Katya was warm and clear in her instructions. She clearly knew how to use the light based on the time of day. We did different setups, poses, and outfits. She showed me some of the photos as she was taking them to get my feedback, and she even sent me a few clips I could use on social media.
It was a fantastic experience, and I am so pleased with the results:
My takeaway? Everyone should get their photo taken by a professional. Bonus for doing it in their setting.
