Learn How Design Can Enhance Your Business

How to Create an Icon

Ever noticed how Google, Fox News, Craigslist, and a host of other websites have a small icon next to their website address in the Address bar of Firefox, Internet Explorer and other browsers? Now you can make your own:

Create An Icon

1. Create an image for your icon that is 16x16 pixels. This is pretty tiny, so make sure it's a simple, clean design reflective of your website.

2. Save the image as as an icon (.ico) file to the root folder of your website. (If your image editing software doesn't support the icon format, go to the Favicon Generator; browse to where the image is saved on your computer and click on 'Generate Favicon.ico'. Then click on 'Download Favicon', uncompress the file, and save the favicon.ico file to the root folder of your website.)

3. Add the following HTML tag to your web page after the <head> tag and before the </head> tag:

<link href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" rel="shortcut icon">

(Substitute 'favicon.ico' with the file name you saved your icon as if you did not use the Favicon Generator.)

Now, you're done! You may need to refresh or restart your web browser before you see the change. You can also use the Favicon Validator to make sure you included your icon correctly on your webpage. The validator checks that the HTML code is inserted correctly and that the .ico image is present.
